Thousand Arms Review
by Philip Burns
I'll be honest i was very skeptical going into this game, i mean a dating
sim/rpg, i had no clue what to expect. But when it was all said and done this
game was one of the best on PS. Most people will say how cool the dating part
of the game was, and make no mistake about it, it was a very nice addition, but
what really stood out was the best voice acting an rpg has ever had. 12 hours
of beautifully done voice overs is something that can bring a tear to your eye.
Besides a short quest & the absolute worst battle system in the history of rpg's,
this is a game that can't be missed by rpg fans.
STORY
The story to this game is very nice, and while not the best part of the game,
it's good enough to keep you interested, which is really all that matters. The
story starts out in "Kant" a pretty peaceful town, but when the Dark Acolytes
hit Kant the sh%$ hits the fan. Driven out of his town a boy named Meis travels
to Boyzby where he meets the girl of his dreams in Sodina, and her brother the
great spirit blacksmith Jyabil. This is where your quest begins. This is also
one of the easier rpgs out there, so you shouldn't have many problems going through
it.
Score: 7/10
SOUND/MUSIC/VOICE OVER
Well, you know where i'm gonna go here, the voice acting. It's just sensational,
easily the brightest part of this game. I mean 12 hours people, what's not to
like? Every character had a perfect voice for their character, if you like voice
acting in rpg's, just go out and buy this game now. It's really enough to warrant
a purchase. The sounds in the game were okay, nothing really standing out, the
battle cries were pretty good. The music in this game was pretty forgettable,
besides an excellent opening & closing song.
Score: 9/10
GRAPHICS
This game sports pretty nice graphics, i love the anime feel of the characters,
and the CG is very, very nice. This is also a very colorful game, maybe the best
use of colors i've seen for an rpg. The graphics are overall top notch in this
game, not much to complain about, besides how the characters look upclose.
Score: 8/10
GAMEPLAY
The gameplay in this game revolves around dating. In order for your weapons
to get stronger & to learn magic/specials you have to raise a girls intimacy level.
Thus the need to date is very significant in completing the game. The higher your
characters level is, the more powerful your weapon will be when you forge it with
a girl. Very innovative indeed, but dating can get oh so repetitive. Now like
most of you, i've never played a dating game before, or anything like one, so
this was new for me and i didn't know what to expect.
What could've turned out to be a great addition to an already good game, just
turned out to be a chore after awhile. It's extremely fun to date a girl at first,
cuz it's all new, but how many times can you take being asked "Meis can you stand
rats"? Or "Meis do you like Onions"? It gets old after you've heard every question
2 or 3 times. The mini games with the girls are okay, but get old also. And the
present deal is just a waste of time.
Onto the Battle System: This is easily the worst part of he game, and also
easily the worst battle system ever to grace an rpg. You get 3 characters in battle,
but honestly only need two of them. Here's why this system is so bad, you have
three guys, but only one can fight, the back up guys can't even use attack magic
for gods sake, this makes for very long battles even with random enemies. It just
feels like a chore fighting after, well the first fight. It's just ridiculous,
and you can't even use both back up characters, you get to choose which one when
the meter fills up, and pretty much just pick the one with the most magic points,
cuz that's all the backup characters are for. If you can get past this part of
the game, which is hard to do, you'll enjoy a good story with excellent voice
overs.
Score: 3/10
REPLAY
You really have no reason what-so-ever to play this game ever again, no different
endings, and with the beyond awful battle system, you'd almost be crazy to play
the game again. I guess you could go back and date the extra girls not in your
party if you didn't the first time through. Also you could try and get some of
the prizes in Damashi Forest. But that's about all.
Score: 4/10
Overall
I liked this game more than expected. The dating aspect was pretty cool for
awhile, and what's not to love about the magnificent voice acting found here....
And if it wasn't for the terrible battle system i may have loved this game.
Favorite Character: Meis
Least Favorite Character: Nelsha, god she was annoying!!!!
Best Fighter: Muza
Worst Fighter: Kyleen
Favorite Part of the Game: The beginning, with the kick ass japanese song
going, It was done perfectly.
Time to Complete Game: A very short 31 hours.
Final Score: 7/10
