CHIRALUTD abroad

Here is my Final Fantasy VII fanfic number one. It's very simple. Read it! I'll have included a bonus when I sort some stuff out. You'll be able to click on links throughout the text for appropriate music. That will be on my own site. For now, I hope you enjoy it.

The collisions of worlds.

Chapter one: The ten years.

Ten years after the Meteor/Holy/Sephiroth etc. incident, Cloud and the others were discussing what to do.
But to fill you in on what happened in those ten years. Midgar was in pretty bad shape, but not totally destroyed. Many of the ShinRa workers who hadn't been in the HQ at the time were alive, but out of a job. The world knew about Cloud and saving the planet and so on - Holy had seen to that - and many people were looking at ShinRa and their position in the new world.
To cut a long story short, Cloud decided to take over ShinRa, Inc. Appointing himself President, Yuffie Vice President, and the rest of the group in other administrative positions, he started to get the world in order again.
One of the highlights was coming up with the lifestream equaliser theory. Holy had drawn a lot of the lifestream to Midgar in order to destroy Meteor, and this was slowly dissipating. It was Barrett who came up with the idea that this movement could be channelled through certain pathways, and made to turn turbines rather like hydroelectric power. The old electricity distribution systems and some of the stuff related to the old Mako reactors could be used, reducing costs; even under Cloud ShinRa still wanted to make money, but now without destroying everything. This new system did not destroy the spirit energy, in fact it helped the planet heal injuries and replenish the depleted areas faster. As spirit energy is always circulating, the system would last for ever.
It was when Cloud and Tifa were surveying spirit energy levels around Mt. Nibel that concerns begun to develop - about Sephiroth. He hadn't returned to the Planet; Cloud was sure about that, as he hadn't totally come from the Planet, being infused with Jenova. But he had to have gone somewhere; the question was where?
Jenova, on the other hand, was still around, though not doing much. It was at the Nibel reactor, and while the survey plane passed over, Jenova began to move.
It showed Cloud a vision. The final battle between Sephiroth and Cloud was shown, and then Sephiroth's apparent death. Sephiroth was seen turning into red lifestream, and merging with Cloud's own green spirit. Then the red filled the space, and filled the entire universe, before quite suddenly disappearing.
The vision was real, not a hallucination, and it had been captured on video. Cloud had been unable to sort out its meaning, and eventually decided to launch a worldwide competition for interpretations. Many entries were received, but Cloud's instincts told him all were wrong.
Anyway, at the point of this discussion, which was happening in the new ShinRa HQ at Kalm, Vincent and Nanaki were talking.
"But surely lifeturbine will meet energy needs. Why open the coal mines again." said Vincent.
"I'm thinking that transport needs revitalising. We could get gas out of the coal and use it to power cars."
Vincent was not pleased. "I thought we decided that nothing that would pollute was permitted!"
"It wouldn't pollute, not with an efficient engine design. The hydrocarbons would just produce water and carbon dioxide." "Excuse me," said Tifa. "Couldn't we extract hydrogen from the sea and use that".
"Uneconomical" said Nanaki.
Vincent explained; "We worked out that not enough fuel could be carried, so we'd need filling stations every 30 miles, which is too much."
"On the other hand, a fuel cell could be used, and that would only require power points to recharge." suggested Nanaki.
The discussion continued for about an hour, until it was interrupted by Cloud bursting in, Barret and Cait close behind.

Chapter 2: Hopes and threats.

"We've got it!" exclaimed Cloud.
"Where Sephiroth is" said Cait. Then Barret added, "And how to bring Aeris back!"
"Aeris!" shouted Nanaki, Vincent and Tifa.
Cloud proceeded to explain: "You see, it was Bugenhagen's idea. He phoned up saying that maybe, just maybe, Sephiroth had gone to prespace. I checked the theory books in our library, and found the details. Prespace, sometimes known as K, the compactified space, is common to all universes."
"If Sephiroth is in K, then this is bad news. You see, he could break out into a different universe", said Cait.
"And cause havoc there" added Barret.
"But how does this relate to Aeris" asked Tifa, sceptically.
"I'll explain this one", said Cid, walking into the room.
Cid proceeded to explain. He said that another universe had managed to obtain data about the FF7 universe, and had made it into a game (guess what universe!). They had therefore got some of the old information, which included the Aeris information that was lost after her death.
"I get it" interrupted Vincent. "We go to this other place and get the Aeris data. Then we bring it back here and infuse it into our own, before resurrecting Aeris from the City of the Ancients."
"Yes. That explains why previous attempts failed, and why all attempts are doomed to fail without the data. You can't bring back something that isn't encoded in spacetime." said Cloud.
Yuffie then entered the room. Typically, she had been listening at the door, and equally typically, she asked whether this place would have materia.
"No", said Barret. "The place we are looking at has very little magic. Worse still, our own materia won't work there."
"It's too far from this planet", said Cloud. "But here's the bad news. Sephiroth's magic will work there."
"The worse news is that this is the very universe that Sephiroth is looking to invade", said Cid.
"Then what're we waiting for!" shouted Tifa. "Let's bust Sephiroth!"
"Hold it, Tifa", said Cloud, taken aback. "While we have got a way to get to this other universe, it's going to take a while to perfect."
"How long is "a while" " asked Nanaki.
"'bout a month" answered Cid.
"It'll be a month their time too?" enquired Tifa.
"Sure" said Cloud.

Chapter 3: To the new world.

A month later, Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie, Vincent, Nanaki, Cait, Barret and Cid were going to the new universe. The device to be used was called a hyperporter - a teleporter that would work between universes as well as within them. Ordinary teleporters had been developed long ago, but were not used due to excessive energy demands. However, this was a special case, so the energy was to be made available.
The group entered the hyperporter with the hardware control manager and the software administrator; pilot and co-pilot in other words. The power system was connected, and the destination specified. It as precisely 22:08 source time, 08:49 target time. The system powered up, blacking out the entire planet. Then, the hyperporter ported.
This was only stage one. The hyperporter was now in prespace. Happily, there is plenty of energy in prespace. As size does not exist in prespace, infinite energy was needed, and zero energy at the same time. This presents a problem, but the software administrator sorted it out. Bizarrely, size does exist in K, so the hyperporter had scale and yet did not have scale. Again, the software administrator sorted things out, and it took less than ten minutes to initiate stage two.
The group then landed on the new planet, in the middle of a school field in Birmingham, England. The language converter was activated, so that Cloud and the others would speak English rather than ShinRi, Cetra or Mid - the three languages of their own world. Then they hid the hyperporter, so that people would not be puzzled by it.
Now the task was to find the data. Cloud assumed it would be encoded into spacetime, but Nanaki knew better. It would be on one of the game disks, so the task was to purchase a copy of Final Fantasy 7. It had to be a new copy, so the data hadn't already been read and the etherdata - the "impression" that the real data makes on spacetime - transferred.
There was a problem. They hadn't brought a money converter with them, and Gil was no use, even though their 30 million was worth about £2 million pounds directly, and £500 billion in terms of home purchasing value, thanks to the availability of magic back home. So they had three options: nick the game, nick some money, or earn some money.
"Let's just nick the bloody thing", said Cloud.
Barret disagreed. "I think it might be easier to nick some money"
Yuffie was on Cloud's side. "I'll get it. You know how good a thief I am."
"We caught you last time!" interrupted Tifa.
"I should just keep out of the way. I'll puzzle people otherwise" said Nanaki.
Cait wasn't much help either. "It was a good idea for me to come in person. But as I'm wheelchair bound, I can't really help"
Cid, patient as usual, had other ideas. "Would it be that hard for us to get a job and earn some money?"
"I can't work, and nor can Cait or Nanaki. Barret's got that arm of his, Yuffie would steal money anyway, so that leaves Cloud, Tifa and Cid" said Vincent.
"Me, the President of ShinRa, work in MacDonald's! Not likely!" objected Cloud.
Tifa simply said, "I don't feel like it."
"I thought you already knew, I'm doing it!" said Cid.
"No, you're not. It will take too long." stated Cloud.
"He's right. We have to do this bit before Sephiroth comes." added Tifa.
The discussion lasted for a long time, but in the end it was Cloud who vetoed all the bizarre suggestions (like teleporting into Squaresoft head office) and decided to rob the local Safeway supermarket, on Kings Heath High Street. Cloud, Vincent and Yuffie were to go, and the rest of the group went to find a way into the school, as it had started raining.

Chapter 4: Ethics?

Cloud, Vincent and Yuffie soon reached Safeway, and entered through the main door, collected a basket and generally acted normal. Their clothes did get some funny looks, but thankfully Cloud had a folding pocket sword, so it was not noticed.
Having got some fairly normal groceries, the three proceeded to the checkout. Yuffie hung back, while Cloud and Vincent queued up. When they reached the checkout, they had the goods scanned. When the cashier said "11 pounds 33 please", Vincent sprung into action.
"Hand over the money" as he pulled out his Sniper CR.
"Now!" added Cloud, unfolding his Compactima Weapon - the pocket sword.
Naturally, the cashier was trained. She slammed the drawer shut and hit the panic button, screaming "ROBBERY! HELP!". In the resulting ruckus, Yuffie forced open another cash drawer in an unoccupied checkout. Gathering up the money, she shouted "Got it!"
Vincent shot at the window, and Cloud dodged the security guards and cut the glass down with his sword. Then the three ran out, and leapt over moving traffic before dashing round the back of the Baptist church.
Taking a breather, the three decided to try and sneak back to Queensbridge, the school they had landed at, knowing the police would be looking for them. Once at Queensbridge, the others could do work, so Cloud, Yuffie and Vincent need not appear again.
As they were crossing the railway tracks they heard a cry of "Stop! Thief! Police!"
"Fuck this!" exclaimed Cloud.
"Run!" shouted Vincent. "I'll hold them off!", taking aim.
Thankfully, Yuffie remembered they had agreed to cause no casualties. "Hold your fire, Vin!"
Next second, they were tearing off down the tracks and scrambling up the bank. Without stopping to cross the road, they climbed up the wall that was adjacent to the pavement, and ran round the back of the school. Ascending the fire stairs they got into the music room, where the others were waiting.
Did you get seen?" asked Cid.
"You didn't cause a commotion did you?" said Barret.
"I think...we...lost them." gasped Yuffie, exhausted.
Nanaki, calm as usual, asked "How much did you get?"
"two-fifty, or thereabouts." replied Cloud.
"Pounds, that is" added Vincent. "And don't call me Vin, Yuffie! I'm not your boyfriend."
Everybody laughed. It was common knowledge now that Yuffie and Vincent were together, but Vincent would always deny it.
Cid then said "OK. I'm off to get the game. I've detected a copy in HMV in town, so I'll take the bus and be back soon".
"Go out the other end of the school. We might be being watched, so be careful" advised Nanaki.
"Alright. See ya later!" Cid said, leaving the music room.
"OK, so he should be back in a couple of hours. Which leaves us enough time to look at getting back." said Cloud.
"We're going to need a lot of power - probably more than they generate here." remarked Nanaki.
Barret, however, had already worked everything out. "We'll have to sneak into the National Grid control centre, and divert all electricity to our hyperporter. It should take about 30 seconds to charge"
"Where's this control centre, then?" asked Yuffie.
"Not far from here" answered Barret.
"Wait a minute. Weren't we going to deal with Sephiroth. He's coming here, right?" said Tifa.
Vincent objected "That was your idea, not everyone's. I never intended to stay with you this long anyway."
"Don't lie, Vin. What's the real reason why you don't hate Sephiroth? You never told us." said Yuffie.

Chapter 5: A revelation.

"Sephiroth is... my ... grandson." replied Vincent.
"What?" exclaimed everybody.
"But Hojo is Sephiroth's father, right. And you're not old enough to be Hojo's father." asked Cloud.
"Myself and Lucrecia had a child. Before the child was born, ShinRa captured Lucrecia. The child's name was Scarlet." replied Vincent.
"Scarlet! You mean the weapon developer?" said Cait.
Vincent carried on. "Yes. Scarlet was born in the ShinRa HQ. Then Lucrecia was released. Professor Gast took cells from Scarlet and fused them with Jenova cells. Before he could further fuse them, to create Sephiroth, Hojo took over. He fused the Jenova-Scarlet cells with his own, to create a test tube baby. This was raised in a fast incubator, so that after one year, the baby would be a 20 year old adult, and a formidable soldier."
"And that was Sephiroth?" asked Nanaki.
"Right." continued Vincent. "Scarlet and Lucrecia were unharmed by the experiment. They were both let go. Scarlet was raised by Lucrecia alone. This all happened 29 years ago"
"So let me get this right. You're Sephiroth's grandfather, and Lucrecia his grandmother. Then Scarlet and Jenova are both his mothers, and Hojo is his father." said Nanaki.
"Sephiroth had two mum's?" asked Yuffie.
"Three" answered Tifa.
It was Vincent's turn to be surprised. "I only heard of two. Who was the third mother?"
"Aeris's. The ShinRa needed Sephiroth to have the powers of the Ancients, as their ultimate soldier. So they infused him with more DNA samples, from Aeris's parents, who were both Ancients." Tifa replied.
"Sephiroth has three mothers - one Cetra, one an alien, and one normal. And two fathers, one of whom is a Cetra, and the other a weirdo. That's right, isn't it" asked Barret.
"I think so" said Tifa.
"Probably" added Vincent.
"That explains Sephiroth's power. He's born of not two, but five parents. That makes him theoretically more powerful than I am." said Cloud.
"You're the fusion of two people, right?" asked Vincent.
"Myself and Zack. In ShinRa's combination power project." replied Cloud.
Cloud had discovered a lot about himself since taking over ShinRa, Inc. Sephiroth had not been entirely true when he said that Cloud had been created by the ShinRa. Cloud and Zack were both normal people, having led real lives. The ShinRa captured them, and fused them into one person. This person was closer to Cloud, and held Cloud's memories and feelings. The cover story was that Zack had died - even President ShinRa did not know the truth, and often wondered what had become of the great SOLDIER member Zack, who had reached first class. This explained the reason why Cloud sometimes freaked out near Sephiroth. Sephiroth was able to force Cloud to obey the hidden thoughts of Zack, who would have supported Sephiroth in his plans to become a god.
"I don't get it, though. You don't seem to hate Sephiroth, understandably. But you help us destroy him last time, and you haven't exactly tried to cause us problems, when we're against Sephiroth." continued Cloud.
Vincent's reply was a surprise to everybody. "I don't hate Sephiroth. But I don't like what he's doing. Nevertheless, just because he tried to destroy everything, doesn't mean I want him dead".
"Don't want him dead! You helped kill him! What's the matter with you?!" shouted Barret, quite shocked.
"I killed him to stop him destroying everything. I am prepared to kill him again, if it is what it takes; I would prefer not to have to." replied Vincent.
Cloud understood. "I see. I guess it makes no difference. Since discovering my own history, I don't hate him so much either."
"Hang on a minute." Yuffie interrupted. "That stuff you said, Tifa, about Sephiroth's parents being Aeris's mum and dad - then that makes Aeris Sephiroth's sister!"
"Uh? What?" answered Tifa.
"Sephiroth and Aeris share parents. That makes them brother and sister, surely." explained Yuffie.
"Not full siblings. Not all the parents are common." replied Nanaki. "Though I suppose you don't normally get people with five parents."
"You're right. How come I didn't make that connection before. I've known that for three weeks and not noticed. Then you hear it, Yuffie, and figure it out straight away." said Tifa.
"But that would mean Sephiroth killed his sister!" said Cloud, startled.
"He didn't know. Not then. He does now." remarked Vincent, surprising everybody.
"How do you know? Have you been in touch with him then?" asked Barret. "Because if you have, I'll kill you!!"
"The ShinRa records have Sephiroth as having died unaware. If this is true, I'll have to tell the Mayor to update them." mumbled Cait.
"I just sensed it as we were in K. I suppose it's connected to issues of scale there - I must have read Sephiroth's mind." said Vincent.

Chapter 6: The beginning of the end.

Just then, Cid crashed in, slamming the door as usual. "I've got the disk. But that motherf***ing Sephiroth is here!"
"Sephiroth landed! Where?" asked Cloud.
"Las Vegas, the United States of America." said Cid.
"Vegas? Sephiroth isn't a gambler. He hates casinos." said Cait.
"Exactly. He's already destroyed three, not to mention killing over 150 civilians and 32 police officers. It was on the news." said Cid.
"We have to get there!! He can't be allowed to destroy another planet!!" urged Vincent.
Nanaki thought. "Yes, but how. The hyperporter's energy demands are too great, we'd be spotted if we take a plane, and-"
Cid interrupted Nanaki mid-sentence. "We brought the midwind, remember. That little airship. It's up to the job alright. We'll cross the Atlantic in that. I mean, it can do Mach 5. We'll be there in no time."
"Let's go, everybody. To Vegas!" said Cloud.
15 minutes later, the group were speeding across the Atlantic Ocean. At Mach 4.5(the maximum cruising speed), they had caused quite an upset in England by going supersonic over land. The 2010 world cup was hosted by England, and the final was being played - Argentina VS USA - when the sonic boom damaged the roof of the Europe Stadium in London, necessitating an evacuation. Besides this, the glass front of the NATO civilian ops HQ shattered; a single pane of glass 40 storeys high, crashing onto the street below injured many. Numerous more panes of glass were shattered, and people deafened, as the midwind blasted on. Passengers on a Concorde flight that had been turned back were shocked to see another plane fly so close to them it almost hit, and ships below had their portholes smashed by the boom. Still the midwind flew on. More destruction was caused when it did not slacken speed as it flew over America; shattered glass, deafened people and very concerned police were the legacy of the midwind.
Meanwhile in Vegas, the situation was rapidly getting out of control. The city was ablaze, with six separate fires across the city threatening to merge into a giant inferno. Firefighters were blocked from getting through by Sephiroth. People were fleeing the city; those who were still alive, for the direct death toll - those killed by Sephiroth, not the fires - had reached 2300. Right in the middle of it all, watching the destruction, was Sephiroth. Laughing.
Cloud and the others on board the midwind were not the only ones headed to Vegas to stop Sephiroth. A fleet of US jets was also headed there, each carrying powerful air-to-surface nuclear missiles. The United States military was prepared to destroy Vegas totally to kill this man, who was now more wanted than Osama bin Laden. Of course, if they had known who he was, they would have just nuked the place straight away.
2 hours later , Cid landed the midwind, and he and the others got off. They immediately began discussing strategy.
"I think the best idea is to start by putting those fires out. That'll make it easier to get to Sephiroth." said Nanaki.
"How, though? We haven't got any equipment or magic." said Cait.
"We'll just have to get some, then. There's no other way. Move out! Find a fire truck, and find one now!" ordered Cloud.
"Wait! I've got a good idea." said Cid, before everybody tore off. "When we get a fire truck, Sephiroth will come after it, to stop it, because he doesn't want the fires extinguished. Then we can get him!"
"Good one, Cid. MOVE OUT!!" shouted Cloud.
"Everyone ran off in different directions., except Cait, who being in a wheelchair, couldn't go anywhere fast. Within about five minutes they heard Yuffie's shout. "I got one!"
Everybody rushed towards the truck. Yuffie explained. "It was occupied, but I nicked it. Did what I'm good at!"
It was a tight squeeze for the eight, especially as one of them was wheelchair bound. However, they all got in. Then Cid drove the truck at high speed towards the strip.
It wasn't long before they were stopped by Sephiroth. They all jumped out, ready to fight. Sephiroth looked alarmed, then said "I'm finished here now. If you want something with me, I'm off to Tokyo." Then he flew into the sky and out of sight.
"Tokyo! We've no time to lose. To the midwind, everybody." shouted Barret, and everybody was back in the airship.

Chapter 7: Race for Tokyo.

Soon the midwind was back in the air, racing away from one destroyed city to another that was endangered. The Pacific crossing, however, would take a long time, so Tokyo would quite possibly be in ruins by the time they got there. Most of this journey was over sea, so less destruction was caused by the mighty sonic boom.
Japan had been warned by the USA that Sephiroth, known to everyone now as The Apocalypse, was headed their way, and the Japanese military had been mobilised. Japan has much experience of earthquakes and tsunamis, but nothing could prepare them for the power of Sephiroth. The disaster to come would outstrip Las Vegas's by far.
Contrary to Cloud's predictions, the midwind in fact arrived only 20 minutes after Sephiroth, who had been forced to take a longer route by the Japanese fighter jets. Naturally, he could have smashed them in two seconds, but he didn't want to waste magic.
Cid landed the midwind again, and they all got out.
"He got away last time, but this time we'll smash him!" ordered Cloud.
"This is going to bigger than even 10 years ago!" proclaimed Cid.
"Last time the fate of the planet was in our hands. This time it's for everything!" declared Barret.
"If we lose this, all is lost." said Nanaki, with his typical seriousness.
"This is about more than universes for me. I have personal reasons." remarked Vincent.
"Will we be all right, Cloud? I mean, wouldn't Sephiroth be out of our league?" asked Tifa.
"Alright, everybody, listen up." replied Cloud. "We're most of us great players. So here's our strategy. Me and Tifa will be attacking full on. Barret, you, Vincent and Yuffie should stay back and use long range attacks. Vincent, if you get limit, don't use it unless we're desperate. Everyone else, limits when you get them. Use your best limit - level 3 or 4. Cait, stay out of his way. You're on healing duties, so be aware. Of course, anybody who needs to heal should."
"What about me?" asked Cid.
"I've got a special job for you. I want you to get some technology - missiles, bombs, whatever. Get some stuff, then go up in the midwind. Attack from the air. Oh, and if you can get a jet or something, use that instead, so as not to wreck our airship."
"My airship, you mean. Alright, I'm onto it." agreed Cid, racing off.
Then the group set off. After a bit of trekking around both intact and ruined parts of Tokyo, they saw Sephiroth, kneeling down doing something. Barret shouted

Chapter 8: Decision time.

"Sephiroth! You're history!"
Everyone was instantly in role. Before Sephiroth had a chance to do anything, he took gunfire from Vincent and Barret. As he was about to fire off a Comet2 spell, Yuffie's devastating Conformer hit him. Then he took hits from Tifa and Cloud, ending up quite shocked by the sudden barrage of attacks.
Despite the power of five successive attacks, Sephiroth was back up, and cast The K Barrier, a spell that reduces all damage by half, casts a double speed regen, triples speed, and blocks status changes. This was followed with Jenova Aid, a non-elemental attack twice as good as Ultima.
Cait was quickly able to heal, as did Tifa. Then Yuffie showed a little smart thinking, by using a Holy Torch item to destroy The K Barrier. Cloud's sword slash severely cut Sephiroth, and Vincent's shot hit him very precisely in the head.
Sephiroth retaliated by attacking Yuffie with the Masamune, intending to slice off her head. He was in for a nasty shock. Yuffie neatly dodged the blow, then pickpocketed two sachets of Stardust; the Comet2 item.
Cloud suddenly shouted "Wait! Do it simultaneously."
Barret and Vincent prepared to shoot, Yuffie threw her Conformer on an arc, Cloud waited to strike, and Cait and Tifa both prepared to use Stardust.
In 3 seconds, everything came together. Sephiroth was blasted by Barret and Vincent, before being bombarded by two lots of Comet2. While this was happening, the Conformer slashed through him, almost chopping of his arm. Just when Sephiroth was thinking it was all over, the mighty slash of the Compactima Weapon hit him, and close to destroyed him.
Sephiroth then showed why he is more than just a good soldier. He casted the devastating Exa Flare - an attack so powerful that not even Emerald Weapon could have withstood it. This would surely have been the end of not only Cloud and his friends, but of the entire island of Honshu, had it not been for...

Chapter 9: The ultimate catastrophe.

Cid's arrival! From the midwind, Cid clearly saw what was about to happen, and promptly used a , the Reflect item! Powerful though Exa Flare was, it was subject to Reflect! The energy gathered into a huge sphere, about 50 metres across, of highly compressed energy, with the power of a 500 Gigaton bomb. Then it blew up.
The blast wave hit the Reflect, and bounced straight back into Sephiroth! The level of energy knocked him about 100 miles into the air, almost into orbit. Yet Exa Flare wasn't finished yet. The blast rocketed outwards - two blasts, in fact, the original and the Reflected. The power razed buildings to the ground, totally burnt up people and animals, and created a mighty crater in the ground for a 300 kilometre radius; the result was that the island of Honshu was almost totally wiped out. Even worse destruction was to come. A gigantic tsunami rushed in to fill the crater. It met in the centre, of course, but the force was so great that it bounced back outwards again to pound the shores of Japan, China, and Korea; much of 'coastal' Japan had previously been mountain forest.
It was not only Asia that suffered the effects of Exa Flare. The blast upset the Pacific rim - the 'ring of fire' that was a plate boundary. Pressure was released all along major fault lines, triggering slips and earthquakes, but none quite so catastrophic as the San Andreas fault. Pressure had been building up all along this fault for 115 years, previous quakes having only partially eased the pressure. When the subterranean pressure wave, itself rather like an earthquake wave, hit the San Andreas fault, it slipped.
A Richter 9.6, the most powerful quake in recorded history. Los Angeles devastated. San Francisco devastated. San Diego devastated. Phoenix, in Arizona, and the destroyed Vegas felt the quake. So did Seattle, and Vancouver, further north. To the south, Mexico City's geology amplified the then fairly weak waves into something quite powerful.
By now, the world was beginning to totally collapse. One city had been burnt, and several others smashed by earthquakes, in addition to a country having been totally wiped out. The midwind's sonic boom, ironically a result of trying to stop destruction, added to the panic and chaos. Stock markets were tumbling, people were rioting, governments and militaries were at a total loss, and a vast number of people truly believed that The Apocalypse was bringing the apocalypse.
Cloud and the others, despite not taking damage from the blast, had still been knocked backwards for several kilometres, though nowhere near as badly as Sephiroth. They had got quite a shock to find themselves in the middle of the ocean, but Cid soon picked them up in the midwind. It wasn't long before the eight were talking again.
"He got away..." said Cloud.
"Well, I guess he won't be trying that one again in a hurry." said Tifa.
"Get real, man! He ain't dead. We gotta make him dead! Move out" ordered Barret.
Naturally, there was a lot of cheering at this statement. However, Nanaki brought everybody back down to earth. "Easier said than done, Barret. Sephiroth is powerful - very powerful. He's also faster than us, even in the midwind. Even if we can injure him, he'll just run off."
"Not likely. Sephiroth's genes give him a win-or-lose mentality. He won't normally run off from a fight, no matter how badly he's hurt." said Vincent.
"Maybe so, but he's still powerful." said Cloud
"You know, I'm starting to wonder about something." said Tifa. "Last time, Sephiroth had an objective, right. Now here, he destroyed Vegas, granted, presumably because of his hatred of gambling. But after that, I don't get his motive."
The discussion continued as the midwind was cruising over the Pacific at a leisurely Mach 2.2. The object was to find Sephiroth, but the eight were in a fairly relaxed mood. They knew that he would be in near orbit, and they were travelling in the opposite direction to that which he had been blasted, so there was a good chance of meeting him. They didn't, however, expect exactly what would happen when they did.

Chapter 10: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

The eight did run into him, 2 hours later. Sephiroth in fact landed on the airship's deck, and proceeded to make his way to the bridge, where Cloud and Vincent where engaged in a game of team chess against Nanaki and Yuffie. Then the door was opened...
"Sephiroth!!! Die!!" shouted Cloud, as The Great One entered.
"That is exactly what I intend to do." replied Sephiroth, calmly.
"Wha?" exclaimed Cloud, startled by the response.
"Why did you destroy Tokyo and Vegas?" asked Vincent.
"The Vegas casinos and the Japanese companies are the same as the ShinRa. They only care about money. I cannot rest until all have fallen. In fact, I can never rest at all." answered Sephiroth.
"Why? What have you done, to be that way? I still don't get what happened, ever since Nibelheim." asked Cloud.
"I've killed too many people who weren't involved. 15 years ago, the citizens of Nibelheim. 10 years ago, the citizens of Midgar. Now, the citizens of Japan and America. All ordinary people living their lives. It's my fault they aren't still living their lives." Sephiroth.
"Post traumatic stress disorder, right. I thought you were created to be immune to it. Your genes show you as able to forget about such things." said Cait. "Nobody is a killer, and everybody. Anybody can kill, and forget about it, but not everybody really wants to. I don't. In any case, for me it goes beyond just civilians. I killed my own sister, knowing I was doing so." answered Sephiroth. "You knew! Then... why?" enquired Tifa.
Sephiroth replied. "At the time I believed I was invincible. Now, of course, I know different."
Tifa understood. Then Sephiroth surprised Cloud by asking him a question. "Why are you here, anyway?"
"To resurrect Aeris. We need the data. In fact, we've got it, but we stayed because you were around, and we felt we had to stop you destroying everything." answered Cloud.

Chapter 11: A hope dashed.

"You have succeeded in stopping me. But you cannot resurrect Aeris." stated Sephiroth.
"Why not? Cid had worked it all out." asked Cloud.
"Are you saying my theories are wrong. Damn you!" said Cid.
"It is only possible to resurrect somebody who has been killed if you also resurrect the killer. Of course, for a resurrection, all people involved must wish to be resurrected. I do not. Therefore, your resurrection will fail." said Sephiroth.
"Why don't you want you be resurrected? Surely everybody would." asked Nanaki.
"There is no purpose for me in your world - in any world, come to that. When I wish to come, you will know." answered Sephiroth.
"How?" asked Cloud, sceptically.
"Simple. There will be a task for me." replied Sephiroth. "I am going now, back to K. There is nowhere left for me. Goodbye."
Sephiroth vanished. The eight were for some time silent, contemplating the meeting. It was Cloud who broke the silence.
"Well, I guess there's nothing else to do here. We'll have to look at getting back."
"We're not in a hurry, so I think I'll keep the midwind at subsonic speeds while we head back to Birmingham." said Cid.
The group of friends were by now very tired, so they all went to sleep while the midwind made its way back to Birmingham on autopilot.
After a long flight, they finally landed at Queensbridge. They were greeted by the hardware control manager, who looked very happy. "You're in luck, guys. I was supervising the 'porter, when it suddenly filled with energy. Don't know why, but it means we won't need to charge. Everybody in, please."
The eight quickly packed into the hyperporter. Then, in a flash of light, it left Earth.

Chapter 12: A world shaken.

The Governments of the world never did get to the bottom of the The Apocalypse incident. The consensus reached was that it had been a terrorist action, and the vast crater had been caused by a top-secret type of bomb. The absence of any papers had been attributed to the hypothesis that The Apocalypse (i.e. Sephiroth) had had them on him at the time of the explosion. The world did recover, and within five years world markets were back in shape. However, there had been a profound change. With the Japanese companies dead, the mighty Microsoft was able to extend its sphere of influence, trebling its size and diversifying into such things as cars, space exploration and agriculture. It was only a matter of time before Microsoft owned the world, and the ShinRa came again.
